2020: Manhattan Voted Film Forum Best Movie Theater!
209 W Houston St
(212) 727-8110 – www.filmforum.org
For many New Yorkers, the longstanding Film Forum movie theater on West Houston Street is considered a treasure that provides audiences with an intimate and unique movie-going experience. The theater began serving the city in 1970 as an alternative screening space for independent films and have kept that ideal as their main purpose throughout their decades-long history. The Film Forum prides itself on carefully and caringly curating an array of international films as well as American and international classic movies that showcase “diverse social, political, historical and cultural realities.” The nonprofit theater, which is open 365 days a year, relies mostly on public funders that allows them to steer away from Hollywood’s high-grossing films and instead take risks by presenting projects by emerging filmmakers.
